Biography
Crafting words that bridge the human experience with divine truth.
Romel Sylne Jr. is a Haitian American author and award-winning spoken word poet whose work rises from the intersections of loss, faith, memory, and resilience. After losing both parents at the age of twelve, he discovered that poetry could serve as both refuge and revolution — a means of transforming grief into grace, and silence into song.
Through his writing, Romel invites readers to stand tall in the face of adversity, to heal aloud, and to rediscover the quiet power of vulnerability. In 2025, he was honored with the Quebec Writing Federation's Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Award, recognizing the emotional depth, social impact, and lyrical force of his voice. His performances and writings have carried from intimate open mic stages to radio airwaves.
Romel is the founder of Reading is Forever, a growing movement dedicated to inspiring a love of reading and championing the transformative power of literacy. Born in Florida and now living in Canada, he is the author of six books, including Where Footsteps Lead Me, When Black Boys Cry, She Is…, A War Between Two Lands, Heading Home Soon, and most recently Keep The Light On For Me.
